Sunday between 27 November and 3 December
First Sunday of Advent (Year C)
First Reading - Jeremiah 33.14-16
A reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah.
The days are surely coming, says the Lord,
when I will fulfil
the promise I made
to the people of Israel
and the house of Judah.
For I will raise up
a new Son of David, who will bring
justice and righteousness
to the land.
In those days,
Judah will be saved,
and Jerusalem
will live in safety.
And they will declare
that the Lord
is their justice,
their righteousness,
and their salvation.
This is the word of the Lord.
Second Reading - 1 Thessalonians 3.6-13
A reading from the first letter of Paul
to the Thessalonians.
Timothy has brought us the good news
of your continuing
faith and love;
and tells us
that you long to see us again,
just as we long to see you.
This news has given us
great encouragement
through difficult times.
It renews our strength,
to know
that you stand firm in the Lord.
So every day now, with great joy,
we give thanks to God
for you,
and we pray
that we will see you soon,
to teach and encourage you in your faith
once again.
May our God and Father, and our Lord Jesus,
direct our way to you soon.
And until then, may the Lord
make your love for one another
and for everyone
continue to grow,
even as we have
such great love for you.
And may the Lord strengthen your hearts
in holiness,
that you may be ready
to meet our God and Father,
at the coming of our Lord Jesus,
with all his saints.
This is the word of the Lord.
Gospel - Luke 21.25-28,34-36
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to Luke.
Jesus said,
‘In those days, even
the powers of the heavens
will be shaken:
the sun
and the moon
and the stars.
On the earth,
there will be distress
amongst the nations;
and in the oceans,
the thundering
of the waves.
And people
will be in fear
for all
that is coming
upon the world.
Then they will see
the Son of Man,
coming
in a cloud,
with power
and great glory.
When these things
begin to take place,
stand up,
and raise your heads,
because your salvation
is drawing near.
These things
will come upon
all who live
on the face
of the whole earth -
so be ready.
Do not
let your hearts
be weighed down
by the excesses
and worries
of this present age,
for that day
to catch you
unexpectedly.
Be alert
at all times,
praying
that you will have the strength
to escape
all these things,
and to stand,
on that day,
in the presence
of the Son of Man.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
