Sunday between 14 and 20 January
Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C)
First Reading - Jeremiah 1.4-10
A reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah.
The word of the Lord came to me,
saying, ‘Before you were even born,
I chose you,
and I appointed you
to be a prophet
to the nations.’
And I said, ‘O Lord, I do not know
how to speak, for I am only a child.’
But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not be afraid,
and do not say
that you are only a child,
for I am with you
to protect you,
and you will speak my word
to many nations.’
Then the Lord touched my lips,
and said, ‘Now I have put my words
into your mouth.
See, today I appoint you
over kingdoms and nations,
to uproot, and overthrow,
destroy, and tear down,
build up, and plant anew.’
This is the word of the Lord.
Second Reading - 1 Corinthians 12.4-11
A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians.
There are many different gifts,
but only one Spirit.
There are different kinds of ministry,
but all serving the same Lord.
There are different activities,
but in all of them, and in everyone,
it is the same God at work.
And the work of the Spirit, in each individual,
is given
for the good of all.
Through the Spirit,
one person receives the gift of wisdom.
Another, by the same Spirit, receives the gift
of knowledge.
In the same Spirit, another receives the gift of faith.
Another receives gifts
of healing,
and another receives the gift
of the working of miracles.
Others, in the same Spirit,
receive the gifts
of prophecy, discernment,
languages, and interpretation.
All these gifts
are the work of the one Holy Spirit, who
distributes
these gifts
as the Holy Spirit wills.
This is the word of the Lord.
Gospel - Luke 2.41-52
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to Luke.
Every year,
Jesus’ parents
went to Jerusalem
for the festival of the Passover.
When Jesus was twelve years old,
they went to Jerusalem
as usual
for the festival.
At the end of the festival,
when they left Jerusalem, to return to Nazareth,
the boy Jesus
stayed behind in Jerusalem,
but his parents did not know it.
Assuming that he was in the group of travellers,
they went a day’s journey,
then started to look for him
amongst their relatives and friends.
When they did not find him,
they returned to Jerusalem
to search for him.
After three days,
they found him in the temple,
sitting amongst the teachers.
He was listening to the teachers,
and asking them questions.
And all who heard him
were amazed
at his understanding, and his answers.
When his parents saw him,
they were overwhelmed.
And his mother said to him, ‘My child,
why have you done this to us?
Your father and I
have been searching for you
in great distress.’
But Jesus said to them, ‘Why were you
searching for me?
Surely you knew that I must be
in my Father’s house.’
But they did not understand
what Jesus said to them.
Then Jesus returned
with them
to Nazareth,
and he was obedient to them.
And his mother
treasured all these things
in her heart.
And Jesus grew in wisdom, and in stature;
and in favour with God,
and with the people.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
